Dale Hawerchuk: My Life in the NHL

Dale Hawerchuk was born in Toronto in 1963 to his parents, Ed and Eleanor. Growing up in Oshawa, Hawerchuk became a noted hockey prodigy from the time he stepped onto the ice for the first time. On skates by age 2 and in competitive hockey by age 4, Dale Hawerchuk once scored 8 goals in the finals of a peewee tournament in Montreal. His team won the game 8-1. This shattered a record previously held by Guy Lafleur. At the tender age of 15, the Oshawa Generals offered Hawerchuk a tryout. Although he didn’t make the team, the Generals attempted to hide Dale Hawerchuk in the Junior B ranks, a plan that failed miserably as Hawerchuk’s 84 points in just 36 Junior B games that season attracted considerable interest from other teams for Dale Hawerchuk’s services. Despite being located in Ontario, the Cornwall Royals participated in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League throughout the 1970s and the early 1980s. Although the team participated in QMJHL league play, they drafted from Ontario. This allowed Dale Hawerchuk to be drafted 6th overall by the Royals in 1979. Hawerchuk made an immediate impact as a 16 year old rookie in the QMJHL.
